Usman (r) with performers at HAVEN’s regular comedy night
Over a period of months we will run a long, supportive development series of stand-up comedy workshops for people with experience of being a refugee or asylum seeker. This builds upon Usman’s long-standing comedy project and both of our experiences running projects in collaboration with people seeking refuge or asylum, where humour is always an important element in processing difficult experiences and maintaining humanity. We will deliver these workshops with support from Counterpoint Arts. We will involve household name comedians in the workshops as mentors.
Ahir Shah, who we’ve previously worked with and will approach for the project
Nabil Abdulrashid, who we’ve previously worked with and will approach for the project
Nish Kumar, who we’ve previously worked with and will approach for the project
We will film the final performances in front of a live audience. After months of training, refugee and asylum seeker comedians will perform alongside household names, in a warm and supportive environment.
We will edit a full TV half hour comedy show from the material which we will distribute in partnership with a broadcaster/SVOD platform. We will also distribute it to migrant organisations worldwide to use as a tool to explain the link between industrial farming, climate change and forced migration, with humour.
We will edit short sections of the standup routines (approx 15 secs each), pithy one-liners directly linking the food industry, climate change and forced migration.

We will guerilla project these clips onto the headquarters of agribusiness multinationals, lobbyists’ offices, and supermarkets who work with the worst suppliers. The sound will be loud and we’ll project in the autumn early evening, for light levels maximum commuter visibility.
We’ll film the projections on buildings and post these online ourselves. We’ll work with a network of influencers and campaigning organisations to get these clips to go viral, attracting further media interest.
