Could you, or someone in your network, be our new Project Assistant?
Freelance - 1 day per week (flexible) - £120/day - 6 months - London based (due to the location of one project)
satellite is hiring a Project Assistant to work across a number of projects, supporting our Digital Curator. Whilst the position is initially one day a week for 6 months, we are looking to extend the role in future subject to mutual agreement.
satellite is a production company specialising in artists' moving image. Our work is socially engaged, with a focus on the intersection between technological and social change. Our portfolio includes short and feature length work, as well as moving image installation, documentary and music video.
Background
We’re running three projects over the next 6 months:
The creation of a new artists film exploring the effects of the Hostile Environment in East London (including a micro-commissioning scheme for artists with first-hand experience of the Hostile Environment).
An artists’ support project (to be titled), a kind of film-studio-in-a-box, where early-career artists are sent a digital cinema camera, sound and lighting, and a high-end editing computer, allowing them to make work whilst stuck in a local or national lockdown.
The setting up of an artists’ imprint called Bored Of Works. The first release will be a limited release 10” vinyl record (and digital download) of the soundtrack of our film An Intermission. All profits from the record will go towards supporting a group of young people experiencing homelessness.
The Role
Helping manage the studio-in-a-box programme
Co-ordinating the shipping of equipment, ensuring that it is safe, gets where it needs to go promptly, gets returned. Getting all necessary details/paperwork from supported artists. There should be 3 shipments and returns per month.
Managing social media accounts for newly-created artists’ imprint Bored Of Works
Scheduling posts for Twitter and Insta (approx 5 a week), and helping manage the channels. Social media will support the project by raising awareness and encouraging record sales. There is a small promotion budget to help you.
Drafting satellite’s monthly newsletter
You’ll write copy and source images for the newsletter, edited and supported by the Digital Curator.
Writing blogposts on an ad-hoc basis
You might, for example, write a post about artists who are making work for the studio-in-a-box project, or a post about a new Bored Of Works release. There will be overlap in some content from the newsletter and social media posts.
Recording impact of Satellite’s activity
With guidance from the Digital Curator you’ll record the impact of our work and the communities it reaches.
Feeding into general decision making at Satellite
Being part of the (small!) group making decisions about where our work is going and what our values should be.
You won’t be on your own for any of the above tasks (!) but will take the lead on them, calling in support from Edwin, Elizabeth and Dhelia whenever you need.
Essential skills and qualities for the role
Social media skills. We’d like to see successful campaigns you’ve run, or how you use your own social media effectively
Creative IT skills. Including proficiency with Adobe CC (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere etc), as well as standard creative office stuff like shared drives, project management software, Mailchimp, etc
Able to work under your own initiative, prioritising and problem solving. You may have learned this from similar roles, your own arts or social projects, or your personal life
Collaborative working. Experience working as part of a small, agile team, supporting each other and asking for help
Ability to do some moderate physical tasks like moving equipment around in Pelicases
A commitment to the role of the arts in positive social change. We’d expect to see this in either your CV or your statement
A commitment to diversifying our sector. You may be under-represented in the arts yourself, have worked on projects aiming to diversify the sector, or both
We are committed to playing our part in righting our industry’s failure to represent the communities it seeks to serve. We particularly welcome applications from women, people of colour, individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds, low-income backgrounds, disabled people, and those who identify as LGBTQ+.
